Benny Powell Trombonist Of Count Basie fame Dies
Benny Powell veteran trombonist of the Count Basie band (from the early 1950s to early 1960s) died at age 80 on June 26th 2010 it was just announced today (July 11)...he was best known for the tune he made with Basie's band taking a solo turn in the band's 1955 famous recording of "April in Paris". A New Orleans native, Benny had played with Lionel Hampton's big band in the late 1940s, spending the last 25 years playing modern jazz with pianist Randy Weston and his African Rhythms ensemble. He once had a regular gig with the "The Merv Griffin Show" band. More info is available here from the Chicago Examiner.
