Robert Glasper's New Jazz Album Release "Double Booked" Hits The Mark
New York jazz pianist Robert Glasper is about to release his Blue Note Records album "Double Booked" on August 25th, 2009. As my friends at GiantStep.net state:
"One artist, two distinct but interwoven concepts: this is the captivating logic behind Double-Booked, pianist Robert Glasper’s third album for Blue Note. An artist who “unfailingly gets the feeling right” (New York Magazine), Glasper has made waves throughout the music world as leader of both the acoustic Robert Glasper Trio AND the electric, hip-hop-oriented Robert Glasper Experiment. With Double-Booked, the 32-year-old Houston native puts his enviable versatility front and center, emphasizing the different hemispheres of his musical brain on one album."
Three of the tracks give a sample of what level of talent is being put forth in this album...just click on the links for audio streaming:
"All Matter"- Bilal is featured on this track, making it a soul tune, but it still has all the disorder of jazz and improvisation.
"Butterfly"- Radiohead style keys and the auto-tuned voice of Casey Benjamin make this a very progressive take on Herbie Hancock's classic from Thrust, the 1974 follow-up to Headhunters.
"Think of One"- Glasper takes on a Thelonious Monk composition, and gets meta in his solo with layers of samples. Jazz and hip hop fans - listen for familiar chords.
