Johnny Alf Bossa Nova's "Father" Dies At 80

Johnny Alf, a Brazilian pianist and singer credited with inventing Bossa Nova, has died. He was 80...
Alf died Thursday in a Sao Paulo hospital of multiple organ failure after a fight with prostate cancer. (here is his Wikipedia bio -http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_AlfAlf always rejected the term bossa nova, but musicians who came after him, including Tom (Antonio Carlos) Jobim, Leny Andrade and Carlos Lyra, say they were influenced by his style. Ruy Castro, who wrote the definitive history Bossa Nova: The Story of the Brazilian Music That Seduced the World, credited him as a fundamental precursor of the style.

Alf was born Alfredo Jose da Silva on May 19, 1929, in Rio de Janeiro. He learned piano as a child and became an aficionado of early American jazz, including George Gershwin and Cole Porter. He began composing songs in his teens and early in his career began incorporating a samba beat on popular jazz and swing songs. Through his connections with singer Dick Farney and jazz journalist Jose Domingoes Raffaelli, he got a nightclub job in Copacabana, where a young Jobim would hang out with other young Brazilian musicians.

Author of songs such as Estamos Sós, O que é Amar, Podem Falar and Escuta, Alf moved on to play at the Plaza nightclub, considered the cradle of bossa nova. He worked with numerous Brazilian musicians in a singing career that lasted until a few years ago, including Luís Chaves Sérgio Mendes, Luís Carlos Vinhas and Leandro Braga. His playing is registered on 46 albums, singles, compilations and participations.

Alf recorded only nine solo LPs or CDs in his career, including a 1955 78 rpm album for Copacabana Brasil, which is considered by several musicologists to be the first bossa nova album. His later albums include Diagonal, Johnny Alf, Olhos Negros, which he recorded in 1990 after 10 years away from the studio and 1999's Eu e a Bossa.

Rendezvous Band Offers Merging of Jazz and Electropop Music

Check out this up and coming jazz-electropop band about to enter mainstream this year. Known as "Rendezvous", they are currently working with D. Bascombe, the producer/mixer who has collaborated with Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Verve, and Suede. The band plays jazz music but their songs are also classified under electronica... It's interesting how both jazz and electropop were merged into one by this band! You may check out the band's music on http://www.rendezvousmusic.co.uk.

Rendezvous Jazzes It Up! Jazz is not the type of music to be trifled with. Even with the seemingly chaotic nature of jazz, it requires more consideration than most people think. Call it orderly turmoil, if you may. Jazz, just like a person, is made up of many layers that may take time before they are fully understood. Perhaps therein lies the charm of jazz; many people give up trying to comprehend what it means – and only those who have what it takes will reap the wonders of this unique genre. If appreciating jazz does not come naturally, creating it is even more tasking. That’s why jazz musicians receive such respect from the music community; their craft requires flair that if one is not born with, should be worked hard for.

That’s perhaps one of the reasons why the band Rendezvous has earned such acclaim in the world of underground music. They’ve released just three jazz tracks so far, but what they lack in quantity, they have more than made up for in quality. These three tracks, entitled Incognito, No Man’s Land, and So What, have received praise after praise from fellow musicians and listeners alike and have been played with pride in radio stations throughout the globe.

Even worthy of more respect is the fact that Rendezvous’ jazz tracks are not just jazz; they are also electronica. Rarely do we see music that represents different ends of the pole without the roof crashing down.

Rendezvous will always be known for their bold attempt to unify jazz and electropop. Fortunately, they will soon be going mainstream as they are set to release their very first album this year.

Rendezvous’ new album still boasts of a few songs with jazz licks, but they are putting forward a few tracks that go beyond what they have shown before. To see the band in the making of their album, check out their videos in YouTube through the Rendezvous channel or visit their website, http://www.rendezvousmusic.co.uk/. (source: Sandra Gellar)

Salute Wine Bar & Cafe - JAZZzology's Chicago Jazz Music Venue Of The Month-March 2010

This is the first in a new JAZZzology blog feature known as "JAZZzology's Chicago Jazz Music Venue of the Month". We begin with one of the Chicago Gold Coast’s coziest and most authentic Italian bistros (or "sliver bar" as I call it due to the long narrow nature of the room), Salute Wine Bar & Café located at 46 E. Superior St. Chicago, IL...
WDCB radio presents live jazz at Salute' on Wednesdays from 7 to 10 p.m. No cover! Come on out and support live jazz music in ChiTown and those businesses and people that sponsor it.

Upcoming Jazz Music & Artist Schedule For March 2010

03/03 - Tom Muellner Duo
03/10 - Aaron Koppel Duo
03/17 - Mike Allemana-Greg Fishman Duo
03/24 - Marshall Vente Duo
03/31 - Kelly Brand-Kelly Sill Duo

(WDCB Jazz at Salute' is presented by Salute Wine Bar and Cafe, 90.9fm WDCB Public Radio and Stone Castle Promotions!)

Salute has teamed up with 90.9 FM WDCB Public Radio for its live Jazz Wednesdays. I was there to see the Jose Valdes Duo featuring Dez Desormeaux on sax and flute with Jose on piano, as usual these musicians never dissapoint playing tunes such as "Giant Steps" to music from the Carlos Jobim songbook. I was completely taken in by the very comfortable set of surroundings that made it very conducive to an intimate evening of jazz and great food. Being winter in Chicago, it was great to walk into a street-level small and cozy atmosphere of good food smells, friendly staff, many readied bottles of vino and great jazz. As one opens the large heavy door you are greeted by a smiling member of the staff that makes you feel at ease right away and directs you to the back of the place to hang your coat. Just to the right is a seating arrangement of a coffee table surrounded by a leather couch and a couple of tuxedo style chairs. There is also a very romantic window seat in the bay window of the front of the place just large enough for two. Nuances of Italian culture and styles are evident in little knick-knacks placed throughout.

A small "standing room only" bar is towards the front of the room with several tables filling out the rest of the restaurant area. Black and white photographs of Italian scenes and people decorate the walls reminiscent to me of the post WWII era in Italy of the 1950s (the restrooms are decorated with posters form Italian movies and photos of their movie stars). The menu offers a very select array of Italian wines, cheeses and entrees. I had a chance to try the cheese sampler which was fantatstic and I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to compliment their choice of wine once that has been secured from the waitstaff.

The only thing that detracts occasionally from the coziness of the room is if you happen to be seated near the front of the cafe when the front door is opened, as quite a bit of wintry air rushes in, but I readily discovered even this momentary distraction from the ambiance made one feel that it was good to be inside Salute sipping on one's favorite Italian wine while enjoying the music of an intimate evening of jazz. Salute gets a JAZZzology Jazz Music Venue Rating of 5 out of a possible 5 stars!!!

Acid Jazz...is this a form of jazz music or what? The Debate Continues

Okay...this subject is an ongoing debate I have had with several of my jazz musician friends...is Acid Jazz just a name given by a radio disc jockey to promote some readily unidentifiable form of pop music or is it a form of jazz music?

What is Acid Jazz? you may ask...personally I consider it a sub-genre of the jazz art form...notz.com gives us a little background on Acid Jazz..."Well for one thing it is very difficult to define, the term is used to cover a wide range of music. Originating back in 1987 in the UK dance scene it defined a funky music style which incorporated elements of jazz, 70s funk, hip-hop, soul, and latin grooves. It could be all live, it could be sampled, and it could be a mixture of the both. The focus was on the music and not on the lyrics/words. The music has a definite groove, some is high energy dance normally with a Latin groove whilst others are more contemplative. DJ Gilles Peterson on KISS FM and the Talkin Loud and Saying Something parties formed the basis for the type of music. Gilles went on to form the Acid Jazz record label, whose first single Galliano's "Fredrick Lies Still" a cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead," from the film Superfly was a club hit. Gilles even announced in 1988 that the term Acid Jazz was dead, and that no one wanting respect would dare call themselves acid jazz anymore. For those not aware it should be said that the UK club scene centers around music whereas in other countries such as the USA it centers around fashion. This leads to an ever changing musical environment with a new term emerging every month. Despite Gilles' pronouncement the term Acid Jazz is still used to cover a whole gambit of music, and so the term has stuck."

Here are some websites that are devoted to the Acid Jazz music world and may help you decide for yourself if it is a form of jazz or just a label for a type of commercialized music:

Jazz History Websites

With the passing of February 2010, another Black History Month is on the books. The one true American art form is Jazz music, an indelible mark made by American Black artists which is celebrated continuously throughout the world by jazz musicians and fans. Ever wonder how this art form got its start? Or what it entails? Here is a list of four websites devoted to explaining the history of jazz which I consider pretty good to check out on the subject, some include a timeline. Personally I learned about jazz history through a college course at the University of Illinois back in the 1970s...the class was based on the book by Prof. Johnny Torrio "A History of Jazz" and has left me yearning to learn even more about this American art form...

Reginald Robinson, acclaimed pianist/composer of ragtime and early jazz and blues styles, comes to the Oriental Institute to perform in conjunction with the new special exhibit Pioneers to the Past: American Archaeologists in the Middle East, 1919-1920. This exhibit tells the story of a daring World-War-I-era adventure that led to the Institute's founding and its renowned collection of ancient art and artifacts. Robinson, a MacArthur Foundation Genius Award winner, will bring that era to life through the ragtime and early jazz repertoire that ranks him as America's leading ragtime composer. Following the concert, there will be a coffee reception with the artist and a drawing for a $25 gift certificate from the Suq, the Oriental Institute Museum Gift Shop.
